dearDIEry 3

dearDIEry,

What a week it has been?

Still trying to adjust to this jet-lag. Man, oh man! I am tired and I cannot seem to fall asleep. Geesh, let's get going tho...

I get ready and walk over to the main campus building (after slightly getting lost and not choosing to ask any questions). The map was of little help, but I found it. I ask the guy to direct me to Students Services and he tells me that I need an ID to swipe myself into the building. Well, dear Sir, I am here to pick up my ID, thank you. He shows me where to go and I'm off. ID in hand, and a few queries later, I am out of the building to go explore this place.

I eventually find my way to the shopping center and decided to buy McDonald's yet again. Still not loving it - I mean the one in Canada tastes better (don't @ me). This fast food buying continues for a couple more days because (1) I was trying to get used to the idea of sharing a kitchen with complete strangers and (2) I did not have any pots and pan yet to cook in - I mean there is so much and no more you can pack in two suitcases for a whole year's stay. But then I went shopping for grocery and managed to get a pot and pan at a ridiculously low price. Unbelievable.

Now that we have that out of the way, let's focus on my classroom. I am one of two black students in the class of 16, but definitely the only non-British one of the entire group. Houston, we have a problem. Or, do we? The accent which I have claimed to adore over the years was suddenly drowning me out when I was in a room. Though that did not prevent me from being elected as the Academic Representative for my group. Talk about being the only one - now I was going to be the only student in a room full of lecturers, being the mediating voice between them and the students. I think now we have a problem...

Stay tuned for more.

Cheers,
Davene
